Kevin Lau suspects arrested
March 12, 2014
Mainland police have apprehended two men in Dongguan believed to be the assailants responsible for the cleaver assault on former Ming Pao editor Kevin Lau on February 26.
Commissioner of Police Andy Tsang said today the 37-year-olds have a triad background and fled Hong Kong on the day of the attack.
Hong Kong Police approached the Ministry of Public Security and the Guangdong Public Security Bureau to track down the assailants.
Mr Tsang said a motive for the attack is still under study and there is currently no direct evidence tying it to journalism.
He said Police will liaise with Mainland authorities over the men's extradition.
Seven other men also believed to be connected to the attack were arrested in Hong Kong today.
Chief Executive CY Leung commended Police for their dedication and professionalism, saying they have been investigating the case around the clock. He also thanked Mainland authorities for their assistance.
