February 26, 2014
Chief Executive CY Leung, accompanied by Secretary for Security TK Lai and Secretary for Food & Health Dr Ko Wing-man, visited former Ming Pao chief editor Kevin Lau at Eastern Hospital this afternoon.
Speaking to the media after the visit, Mr Leung reiterated that Hong Kong is a law-abiding city and will not tolerate any violence. He strongly condemned the attack on Mr Lau.
He has asked the Commissioner of Police to conduct a full investigation into the case, and said he will not speculate on the incident's cause.
Mr Leung said the Government cherishes the freedoms of press and speech, which are among the city’s core values.
Dr Ko said Mr Lau is in a critical state but his life is not in imminent danger. The hospital is providing him full medical attention.
During a press conference on this year’s Budget, Financial Secretary John Tsang also expressed his sorrow over the incident and offered condolences to Mr Lau’s family.
