CS: NT plan essential for housing
June 25, 2014
Chief Secretary Carrie Lam says there is an urgent need to push forward the northeast New Territories development plan to facilitate new town developments, and urges lawmakers to approve its preparation works’ funding application.
Meeting the media in the Legislative Council today, Mrs Lam says early funding approval can kick start new town developments, providing much needed land for housing.
She said the plan has been discussed for years, and was approved by LegCo's relevant committees.
Mrs Lam said the Government is sincere in offering compensation and assistance to eligible villagers, but "no demolition and no clearance" is not possible.
Postponing or withdrawing the plan is not in the public’s interest, and is not fair to people and lawmakers supporting the plan, she added.
Mrs Lam also pointed noted that LegCo has its own rules and procedures, and it would harm this system if the Government postpones or withdraws applications whenever a minority of lawmakers oppose them.
