The Centre for Food Safety says Taiwan authorities have seized lard products manufactured by mixing animal feed oil with edible lard for local sale. It has taken actions to prevent the products from entering Hong Kong.
Noting media reports today about substandard lard produced by Cheng I Food, the centre contacted Taiwan authorities for information and launched an investigation.
It has invoked the Food Safety Ordinance to require edible oil importers and distributors to submit information within a set time limit to find out if the affected oil products have been on sale in Hong Kong.
The centre will call on the trade to stop using, processing and selling any cooking oil or products suspected to be involved, and to recall them.
It will enhance checks at Taiwan food product outlets and shops, and the testing of edible oil and high-risk food products imported from other places for contaminants.
