Chief Executive CY Leung inspected the construction progress of the Tuen Mun-Chek Lap Kok Link today.
The 9km link is part of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge and connects the northwest New Territories with northern Lantau Island, the bridge’s boundary crossing facilities and Hong Kong International Airport.
Accompanied by Director of Highways Lau Ka-keung, Mr Leung noted the link will reduce the travelling distance from Tuen Mun to the airport and Tung Chung by 22km.
The link will strengthen the airport's transport network, serve as an alternative route to it, and enhance cross-boundary transportation, he said, refining the regional transport network of Hong Kong, Macau, Shenzhen and Zhuhai.
He also inspected works for the sub-sea tunnel for the Northern Connection, the first time in Hong Kong a sub-sea tunnel has been constructed with extra-large-diameter boring machines.
He noted that boring reduces the dredging and disposal of more than 10 million cubic metres of marine sediment, minimising environmental impact.
