Chief Executive CY Leung said today the Government will submit its political reform package to the Legislative Council for voting as scheduled.
Speaking to reporters after attending a meeting of senior Mainland officials and lawmakers in Shenzhen, Mr Leung said the talk was useful, noting both sides had an in-depth and open exchange during the meeting.
He noted that in the meeting, Beijing officials had reiterated that the National People's Congress Standing Committee's decision last August will not be retracted nor revised.
Mr Leung urged lawmakers to respect people’s aspiration of implementing universal suffrage for the Chief Executive election in 2017, and to support the political reform package.
He said Central authorities have all along been supportive of the development of democracy in Hong Kong. He believed, whatever the result of the vote on the reform proposal, Beijing will continue to support it.
