Secretary for Justice Rimsky Yuen today said the Government will enhance its efforts to promote constitutional development and encourage people to express their views in support of universal suffrage in 2017, to help garner pan-democratic lawmakers’ support.
Mr Yuen told reporters that legislators represent the Hong Kong people in the legislature, so they should vote in accordance with the community’s wishes.
The justice chief also said the Government’s political reform proposal has outlined the electoral methods for the Chief Executive in 2017 and beyond, while the Basic Law states that further changes can be made in future depending on the situation in Hong Kong.
Mr Yuen added that the way forward is challenging, as none of the pan-democratic legislators have agreed to support the Government’s proposal.
