Secretary for Justice Rimsky Yuen says the Bar Association agrees that the proposed method of achieving universal suffrage in the 2017 Chief Executive election is not the endgame.
Briefing reporters today, Mr Yuen said the Bar Association considered that the Basic Law’s Article 45 and Annex I was clear about the procedures to amend the Chief Executive’s selection method.
Speaking on the judicial review application regarding the political reform, Mr Yuen said while he cannot comment on the application itself, it will not affect the current work on constitutional development.
At the same briefing, Secretary for Constitutional & Mainland Affairs Raymond Tam discussed a proposal by Hongkong 2020 to include ‘recommended’ candidates on the ballot.
He said the proposal is not worth considering as it breached the National People’s Congress decision last August, which stated that the Nomination Committee should nominate two or three candidates and each of them should gain at least half of the committee’s support to qualify.
