Pragmatic approach to reform urged
(September 02, 2014)
People who are dissatisfied with the National People’s Congress Standing Committee’s decision on Hong Kong’s constitutional development should take a more pragmatic approach, says Chief Executive CY Leung.Speaking to reporters today, he said people should try to understand the NPCSC’s reasons for the decision and consider the relationship between Hong Kong and the Central Government.
He said, the reality is, if the decision is not followed, Hong Kong cannot implement universal suffrage for the 2017 Chief Executive election. Instead, the 2012 method of selection by a 1,200-member election committee will be deployed again.
Mr Leung said it is better to have universal suffrage than not, adding that people should unite to move towards this goal.
He said the Government will soon launch the second round consultation on the arrangement for the 2017 Chief Executive election and he called on society, including Legislative Council members, to participate in the exercise.
