Reform decision significant: Li Fei
(September 01, 2014)
National People's Congress Standing Committee Deputy Secretary-General Li Fei says the committee’s decision on Hong Kong’s political development is a significant milestone in the city’s history of democratisation.Mr Li attended a briefing session today on Hong Kong’s constitutional development, organised by the Hong Kong Government and the Central People's Government Liaison Office.
He explained a number of issues relating to the decision, including the size, composition and method of electing the committee that will nominate candidates to run in the Chief Executive election.
Mr Li discussed the requirement that a candidate needs endorsement of over half of the committee’s members, the stipulation on the number of candidates in a CE election, and that candidates must love the country and Hong Kong.
He also explained the decision on not making changes to the method of forming the Legislative Council in 2016.
On the Occupy Central action, Mr Li said it is an illegal movement and he believed Hong Kong law enforcement agencies will maintain social order and handle any situation that arises, with the support of the public.
Also addressing today’s briefing session were NPCSC Legislative Affairs Commission Vice-Chairperson Zhang Rongshun, and the State Council’s Hong Kong & Macau Affairs Office Deputy Director Feng Wei.
