Universal suffrage framework set out
August 31, 2014
Chief Executive CY Leung announced today that this is a historic moment for Hong Kong as the National People's Congress Standing Committee had set out the 2017 Chief Executive election framework.
Speaking to the media after the NPCSC decided on the universal suffrage framework, Mr Leung said he hoped citizens would cherish it as it offered for the first time in Hong Kong history every eligible voter the right to elect the Chief Executive.
The Government has much work to do to follow up the offer, including a second consultation on universal suffrage, he added. It will strive to win all legislators' support for the framework.
Mr Leung stressed that the NPCSC's framework is not the final decision since many issues such as candidate number had yet to be confirmed. He called on the public to express their views in a lawful manner.
