Under Secretary for Constitutional & Mainland Affairs Lau Kong-wah says the Government wants to listen to people’s views on constitutional reform, so it is inappropriate for it to comment on any proposals tabled.
Mr Lau told reporters today the Government has been reiterating that proposals should follow the Basic Law and National People's Congress Standing Committee interpretations and decisions.
"The platform to nominate the candidate for the [Chief Executive] election is only one, that is, from the nomination committee. That is the only way to do that."
He said any proposal tabled should be one that stands a reasonable chance of being endorsed by the public and the Legislative Council, and of being approved by the Central Government. It should also be practicable in terms of implementation.
