In a statement issued in response to media enquiries on community activities today, the Government says it welcomes and supports all lawful activities which take forward universal suffrage's implementation for the 2017 Chief Executive election, and opposes all unlawful acts which affect social order and the people's betterment.
The statement said the Government fully respects the public's right to take part in processions and their freedom of expression as enshrined in law.
The Government also sincerely hopes that universal suffrage for the Chief Executive election will be implemented in 2017, so that more than 5 million eligible voters will be able to elect the next chief executive through 'one person, one vote'.
The Chief Executive had submitted his report to the National People's Congress Standing Committee on whether there was a need to amend the methods for selecting the Chief Executive in 2017 and for forming the Legislative Council in 2016.
After the standing committee has made its decision at the end of August, the Government will launch another round of public consultation.
