Gov't responds to Taiwan comment

June 13, 2014

Hong Kong human rights protection has been bolstered since the city's reunification with the Mainland in accordance with the Basic Law, and is on par with other advanced societies, the Government said in a statement.

It issued the statement today in response to a Taiwan Central News Agency comment on the Central Government's white paper on the practice of the 'One country, two systems' policy in Hong Kong.

The statement notes the white paper has stated clearly that Hong Kong residents enjoy fundamental rights and freedom in accordance with the laws, including the Basic Law and local laws.

Hong Kong also has a number of organisations which help promote and safeguard fundamental rights.

It noted that the Basic Law stipulates that Hong Kong will be vested with legislative power and independent judicial power, including that of final adjudication.

The Government will continue to safeguard the Hong Kong residents' rights in accordance with the Basic Law and other relevant ordinances, it said.
