Go-kart safety to be reviewed

The Home Affairs Bureau has instructed the Hong Kong Kart Club to submit a report on the fatal accident at a go-kart circuit at Lung Kwu Tan, Tuen Mun yesterday and conduct a comprehensive review of the safety measures.

Deputy Secretary for Home Affairs Jonathan McKinley inspected the track this morning, checking its safety features and its lease conditions. Noting there are detailed safety rules in place conforming to the International Automobile Federation's regulations, Mr McKinley said the Government will ensure karting is done as safely as possible in Hong Kong.

"The bureau will take the lead in the next couple of days to review with the Hong Kong Kart Club, the governing body [of the sport], and with the concerned government departments the safety procedures and design of the track. We will also be looking at where and how improvements could be made and how quickly, if they are needed," he said.

Preliminary observation showed the club has complied with the lease condition to monitor the kart track operator's implementation of safety measures and submitted periodic reports to the Leisure & Cultural Services Department.

The club is affiliated with the international association and is responsible for the technical monitoring of karting, including track safety. It conducts monthly inspections of the kart track.

The circuit operator is required under lease conditions to report on-track incidents to the Government, and Mr McKinley said he expects a review to be submitted in the coming days. The bureau will hold a meeting with the club this afternoon.

A 15-year-old girl died after her scarf reportedly became entangled while she was driving a go-kart at the circuit. The kart track concerned is now temporarily closed. Police are investigating the incident.
