2 arrested for overloading offences

Two people have been arrested for overloading-related offences during a city-wide operation against overloaded vehicles.

 

With the assistance of a Motor Vehicle Examiner, Police set up on-street vehicle examining stations and checked 184 vehicles. A total of 39 verbal warnings, 141 fixed penalty tickets and 9 summonses were issued.

 

It is an offence to drive or use an overloaded goods vehicle on a road. Offenders are liable on first conviction to a fine of $5,000 and imprisonment for three months and on second or subsequent conviction to a fine of $10,000 and imprisonment for six months. 

 

The owner of the overloaded vehicles may also commit an offence and is liable on first conviction to a fine of $5,000 and on second or subsequent conviction to a fine of $10,000.
