Secretary for Commerce & Economic Development Rita Lau has commended the Customs & Excise Department for its efficiency and good ties with the business sector.

Speaking at a reception celebrating 2010 International Customs Day today, Mrs Lau said through the establishment of liaison groups, the department maintains close dialogue with the business sector.

"The regular exchanges have enabled our Customs to understand better how the market operates, and bring about the necessary changes and improvement to meet the needs of Hong Kong business people," she said.

This strong customs-business partnership, Mrs Lau added, has been extended beyond the scope of traditional customs operations, noting the tripartite co-operation amongst the department, the Consumer Council and industries has laid a strong foundation for safeguarding consumer interests and promoted the integrity of the tourist and retail industries, bolstering Hong Kong's shopping paradise status.

"We will soon roll out the electronic Road Cargo System to facilitate road cargo clearance. The launch of the system will not only mark a new phase in seamless customs clearance, but will also help enhance the efficiency and competitiveness of our logistics industry."

Mrs Lau presented the World Customs Organisation Certificate of Merit to the Consumer Council, six business organisations and three Customs officers.
