Gov't working to curb thrown objects

*

Secretary for Security Ambrose Lee has reiterated the Government's fight to deter the throwing of objects from a height, saying Police will liaise on cases with the Department of Justice to pass views to the court to facilitate sentencing.

Mr Lee today told lawmakers under the Summary Offences Ordinance, if anything is dropped from any building to the danger or injury of any person in or near a public place, the person who drops the object commits an offence and is liable to six months' jail and a $10,000 fine.

"If the incident involves offences of a more serious nature, such as the throwing of corrosive fluid, or manslaughter, Police may initiate prosecution according to other ordinances. The maximum penalty for these serious offences is life imprisonment."

To encourage the public to give information on such cases Police have offered rewards totalling $1.7 million for the arrest of those behind recent corrosive fluid attacks in Mong Kok, Sham Shui Po, Tin Shui Wai, Causeway Bay and Tuen Mun.
