Secretary for Security Ambrose Lee and Acting Commissioner of Police Yam Tat-wing were saddened to learn that Police Station Sergeant Chan Ka-wai died in an Argyle Street traffic accident while on duty this morning.

They have offered condolences to Mr Chan's family. The Force Welfare Services Group has been in touch with Mr Chan's family and will make every effort to help them.

About 10.30am, Mr Chan was travelling along Argyle Street towards Waterloo Road on his police motorcycle, heading for the scene of another traffic accident.

At the junction of Waterloo Road, Mr. Chan's motorcycle collided with a public light bus driven by a 58-year-old man which was turning right into Waterloo Road from Argyle Street.

The officer was taken to Kwong Wah Hospital where he was certified dead at 11.47am. Police are investigating the accident.

Mr Chan, aged 51, joined the Force in 1978. He was attached to the Enforcement & Control Division Patrol Subunit of Traffic Kowloon West and had 17 years of experience in traffic-related duties.

He is survived by his wife and three children.
