Review ordered into traveller assistance

Henry Tang meets media

Review ordered: Chief Secretary for Administration Henry Tang announces the Security Bureau will review its mechanism for helping Hong Kong people stranded overseas.

The Security Bureau will review its mechanism for helping Hong Kong people stranded overseas, Chief Secretary for Administration Henry Tang says.

In response to media enquiries on the handling of stranded travellers in Thailand recently, Mr Tang said although the mechanism had worked well previously, the latest incident unveiled flaws in the system and so a review has been ordered and a report suggesting improvements will be submitted to him.

Mr Tang apologised for the inconvenience caused to Hong Kong travellers in Thailand, reiterating the situation has been closely monitored by the Government at different levels, including himself and Secretary for Security Ambrose Lee. The Government decided to charter flights Monday because there were concerns the situation could deteriorate.

Mr Tang said he was saddened by the death of the Hong Kong man involved in a traffic accident in Thailand, and the Immigration Department has sent officers to help his family. The victim's wife will return to Hong Kong with the body tonight.
