Hong Kong's death toll on the roads last year was 160, the third lowest in the past 49 years and the lowest in Asia, Road Safety Campaign Committee Chairman Lawrence Yu says.
Meeting the media today Mr Yu said the road accident fatality rate here is low compared with other major world cities. The figure is the world's seventh lowest.
Noting the number of deaths and severe injuries caused by traffic accidents is falling yearly, he attributed this to the concerted efforts of different sectors of the community and the general public.
Mr Yu urged people to join the Road Safety Council's largest outdoor promotional event this year - the 2008 Road Safety Launching Ceremony at Siu Sai Wan Sports Ground, Chai Wan, on December 7.
The event will promote elderly pedestrian safety, cycling safety and drink driving awareness with a view to achieving the council's vision of no accidents on the roads.
