A citywide road safety campaign will be held September 20 to 30 aimed at pedestrians, particularly senior citizens. It will be followed by an enforcement blitz against offenders.
The first four days will see Police distribute leaflets at 72 locations, mostly accident blackspots, and appeal for compliance with road safety regulations. Offenders will be given verbal warnings for the first four days with enforcement action taken thereafter.
Police said pedestrians often fail to comply with traffic signals at road crossings or use footbridges or pedestrian subways. Some even climb over kerbside fences or through central reservations onto carriageways.
Sixty-four pedestrians were killed in traffic accidents in the first eight months of the year, an increase of one person compared with the same period last year. Sixty-six per cent were aged 60 or more. About 25% of the 9,636 traffic accidents in the first eight months involved pedestrians and 2,535 people were injured.
