Karaoke bar prosecuted in safety crackdown
*

The Fire Services Department has launched prosecution action against a karaoke parlour breaching fire safety regulations, and issued a warning and advisories to others. The move comes on the first day of a joint inter-departmental taskforce inspection of fire-service installations in karaoke bars.

The group today inspected seven karaoke parlours in three buildings in Wan Chai, Yau Ma Tei and Mong Kok. One will be prosecuted for obstructing fire escapes. Officers also issued 10 fire abatement notices and a warning letter.

Senior Divisional Officer Yip Ming said the group will inspect 112 karaoke bars in older buildings that also house residential quarters, within a month.

Mr Yip said action will be taken against operators who contravene regulations. For serious breaches the group will consider suspending licences.
