Director of Fire Services Lo Chun-hung says his department will continue to upgrade its equipment, adding the Electrical & Mechanical Services Department will study ways to replace firefighters' communication system.
Speaking on a radio talk show this morning he said tenders will be invited for providing new breathing apparatus soon. The equipment will arrive in March.
Mr Hung expressed his sadness over the death of two firemen in the Mong Kok fire last week. The department will render every possible assistance to their families. Counselling services have been arranged for affected colleagues.
A team has been formed to investigate the blaze and will submit a report to Coroner's Court.
On fire safety education, he said the department plans to expand its fire safety ambassadors scheme, appointing a liaison person for every building or housing estate. The appointees will help disseminate fire safety information, monitor fire safety problems, and organise fire drills for their buildings or estates.
The department is also planning to build a new firefighter training school and form a public education centre in the school to enhance people's fire safety knowledge.
