*

An anti-youth drug abuse campaign will launch June 28 featuring television and radio announcements, leaflets, exhibition panels and a theme song.

Commissioner for Narcotics Sally Wong said anti-drug activities will be organised by District Councils, District Fight Crime Committees and other district organisations as part of the campaign.

"We shall also seek collaboration with community and professional organisations, business enterprises and non-governmental organisations to organise various preventive education and publicity programmes," Ms Wong added.

The Action Committee Against Narcotics today heard the total number of reported drug abusers in this year's first quarter was 4,836, similar to the same period last year. But the number of young drug abusers (under 21 years old) grew 15.2% to 1,226.

Heroin remained the most common type of drug abused but the number of users fell 7%.

Ketamine was the most common psychotropic substance abused, with abusers up 21.4% to 1,562, with 64.9% aged under 21.

The number of ice and cocaine abusers grew 22.7% to 383 and 107% to 245, while the number of ecstasy and cannabis abusers fell 19.4% and 14.5%.
