Crime falls 3.5%

Secretary for Security Ambrose Lee
Safe city: Secretary for Security Ambrose Lee says there is no concrete evidence there will be an imminent terrorist attack in Hong Kong.
*

Hong Kong's overall crime rate in the year's first five months fell 3.5% to 32,698 cases, with violent crime down by 3.3%.

Speaking after the Fight Crime Committee meeting this afternoon, Secretary for Security Ambrose Lee said there were fewer robbery, wounding, serious assault, snatching, theft from vehicle, deception and pickpocketing cases.

However, increases were seen in homicide, burglary and serious narcotics offences. Mr Lee said most murders involved personal conflicts, emotional and mental problems, with no connection to organised crime.

Responding to questions on Olympic security, Mr Lee said the Government will ensure Olympic Equestrian Events will run in a safe, smooth and dignified manner, adding there is no concrete evidence there will be an imminent terrorist attack. Noting Hong Kong's terrorism threat is moderate, Mr Lee said law enforcement agencies will remain vigilant and review the situation.
