New Police vessels to boost sea patrols

Divisional Fast Patrol Craft
More manoeuvrable: Divisional fast patrol craft perform the "figure of eight".

Deputy Commissioner of Police Peter Yam has unveiled five new medium patrol launches and six divisional fast patrol craft which will bolster Marine Police patrols.

The medium patrol launch is 19 metres long and five metres wide. With a shallow draft of one metre, it can reach a maximum speed of 45 knots. The divisional fast patrol craft is less than 10 metres long and about 2.5 metres wide. It can travel at a maximum speed of 50 knots since its draft is as shallow as 0.6 metres.

Launching the vessels at Joss House Bay today, Mr Yam said the new vessels' commissioning will provide enhanced police service and increased security for  Hong Kong waters for many years to come.

The vessels will replace the ageing Mark III launches, which have been in service since the early 1980s.

Together with a new state-of-the-art central command system and to be supported by a series of strategically located Police barge operating platforms, the fleet of smaller and faster vessels will allow Police officers to attend and deal with incidents more quickly while providing a strong deterrent to those engaging in illegal seaborne activity.
