The District Court has jailed a former Langham Hotel purchasing officer 10 months for accepting bribes from a frozen meat supplier. He has also been ordered to pay restitution of $65,000 to his former employer.

Wong Wah-lock, 46, pleaded guilty to two counts of an agent accepting advantages.

Wong joined Langham in 1990 and accepted "tea money" - about $1,000 every few months - from a frozen meat supplier since late 2001 as a reward for placing more orders. He also received bribes at monthly mahjong gatherings organised by the supplier.

Wong, the supplier and two other people were arrested during a mahjong gathering on December 6, 2005. About $3,700 was seized from Wong and he admitted it was tea money given by the supplier.

Apart from the defendant, 13 other people have been charged with bribery and related offences in the case. Five of the 12 people convicted have received jail terms ranging three to 18 months, one was ordered to perform 240 hours of community service and six are awaiting sentence. The remaining one was acquitted.
