A Hong Kong University law student has admitted he forged examination result slips and used them to deceive the institute. Cheng Sing-ho, 23, pleaded guilty to two counts of using a false instrument and one of forgery at the District Court today. Another charge of forgery was placed on court file. Judge Chua Fi-lan remanded the defendant in custody until sentencing on August 13.

Cheng was an undergraduate student of the university��s Faculty of Law. When he finished his third academic year in July 2006 he sent an email to the assistant registrar of the faculty, challenging the accuracy of the examination result slip he received from the university. He claimed the Cumulative Grade Point Average shown on the slip did not tally with those shown on the result slips he had received in the previous two academic years and in the first semester of year three.

The slips for year two and the first semester of year three kept in his student file were found to have been replaced with false result slips forged by him. The defendant gave a law professor two false slips dated June 23, 2004, and June 17, 2005. The two slips bore the same altered results as those found in his student file.

On May 28, 2005, the defendant failed to attend an examination for administrative law. He falsely claimed to the faculty that he was unable to attend claiming he was trapped in a lift. To support his claim he submitted a forged letter purportedly issued by the property management company of the building in July 2005.
