9 arrested for smuggling $10m in goods

Hong Kong Police

Marine Police have seized 500 boxes of contraband goods worth over $10 million from a cargo vessel at Clear Water Bay in Sai Kung. Nine men aged 19 to 56 have been arrested.

At about 11.45am yesterday, officers spotted on radar five speed boats heading for Clear Water Bay. The boats berthed alongside a cargo vessel at Clear Water Bay. Cargo-vessel crew members began unloading boxes into the speed boats.

When the crew members saw Marine Police boats, the speed boats fled towards Trio Island and left Hong Kong waters.

Officers stopped the cargo vessel and found contraband goods inside - including industrial sewing machines, MP3 players, cameras, LCD monitors, computer hard disks, notebook computers and semiconductors. Nine Hong Kong men on board were arrested for assisting in exporting unmanifested cargo.

The case has been transferred to the Customs & Excise Department.
