Police will run a one-week campaign from July 15 to educate pedestrians, in particular senior citizens, on road safety. In the first six months of the year, 40 pedestrians were killed in traffic accidents, six more than in the same period a year earlier. Of those who died, 62.5% were over 60.

Police say about 23% of the 7,310 traffic accidents in the first six months of this year involved pedestrians. In all, 1,943 pedestrians were injured.

During the first two days, Police regional road-safety teams will distribute publicity leaflets at about 45 locations in the territory to remind people to comply with road-safety laws. They will give verbal warnings to offenders in the first two days - but will take strict enforcement action the rest of the week.

Common pedestrian offences include failing to comply with light signals, crossing within 15 metres of a footbridge or a pedestrian subway rather than using these facilities, and climbing over kerbside barriers or through a central reservation onto a road.
