Ship anti-pollution laws to be toughened
*

The Merchant Shipping (Prevention of Air Pollution) Regulation will be gazetted July 6 and tabled at the Legislative Council on July 11.

The Transport & Housing Bureau said it will implement Annex VI of the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships adopted by the International Maritime Organisation in Hong Kong.

It will align local legal requirements relating to air pollution from ships with international standards, consolidating Hong Kong's position as a maritime hub. It imposes restrictions on harmful substances like nitrogen oxide, volatile organic compounds and sulphur oxide from ships.

It also seeks to control the quality of fuel oil used and regulates shipboard incineration. Ships of 400 gross tonnage or above should be surveyed and have on board the International Air Pollution Prevention Certificate or the Hong Kong Air Pollution Prevention Certificate.
