Man arrested for blackmail

Hong Kong Police

Police have arrested a 26-year-old man for blackmailing 10 local jewellery companies in Kowloon.

The man was a former employee of one of the companies he victimised.

The companies received a blackmail letter last September. The sender alleged that he had evidence of the companies' illegal activities - including tax evasion, smuggling, fraud and copyright infringement.

The letter demanded the companies pay $600,000 or he would submit the evidence to relevant enforcement authorities.

The companies reported the case to the Customs & Excise Department, and the Police took it over. They arrested the man at his residence in Tai Wai, Shatin yesterday morning.
