Student penalised for impersonation

ICAC

An associate-degree student has been ordered to perform 240 hours of community service by Tuen Mun Magistracy for impersonating another candidate in the Certificate of Education Examination.

Leung Hoi-ting, 20, earlier pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to defraud the Examinations & Assessment Authority.

Co-defendant Yuen Wai-chi, 20, who asked Leung to impersonate her in the examination, was earlier sentenced to 80 hours of community service.

Magistrate Clement Lee said impersonation in examinations is a serious offence, and that Leung's act was premeditated and must not be tolerated.

In October 2005, Yuen enrolled as a private candidate in the examination. In early 2006, Yuen requested Leung to impersonate her and sit for the mathematics examination.

On May 8, Leung went to the examination centre with Yuen's identity card and admission form and took part in the examination.
