Secretary for Security Ambrose Lee says the Government has relayed the appeals of journalist Ching Cheong's family to Mainland authorities, such as granting his release on medical parole, or a transfer to a Guangdong prison.

Mr Lee today told lawmakers the Government has also forwarded a letter jointly signed by them. It pleads that consideration be given to granting medical parole on humanitarian grounds so he can return to Hong Kong for treatment.

Noting the Government is concerned about Mr Ching's case, the secretary said dedicated officers have been assigned to help his family.

"Although the Government is very concerned about the statutory rights of Hong Kong residents, including Mr Ching, who are detained, imprisoned or sentenced on the Mainland, I wish to recapitulate, the prime principle of One Country, Two Systems must be respected and complied with when we render assistance to these residents and their families."

He said the Government will maintain contact with Mr Ching's family and Mainland authorities.
