Tougher fines to deter illegal water use

The maximum fines for illegal water-taking and alteration of fire or inside services, and interference with waterworks have been raised to $25,000 from $5,000, the Environment, Transport & Works Bureau says.

The tougher penalties aim to deter unlawful acts, in particular unmetered water consumption, and protect Hong Kong's water resources. The increase is in line with past cumulative inflation and will not affect the majority of citizens, who are law-abiding.

The bureau will review the fines and provisions in the Waterworks Ordinance and Waterworks Regulations regularly.
