Police arrested 12 suspected illegal workers and an employer in a crackdown on illegal employment on Tung Choi Street in Mong Kok today.

Labour inspectors and Police officers raided 10 retail stalls and arrested workers and an employer in eight of them.

All the suspected illegal workers held two-way permits, mainly from Guangdong and Guangxi, and were working as shop assistants.

Since January, the Labour Department has conducted 124 joint operations with other enforcement departments to combat illegal employment.

The Labour Department reminds people it is a serious offence, and a first-time offender may be sentenced to three months' in prison. It urges people to report illegal employment by calling its hotline, 2815 2200. All information provided is handled in strict confidence.
