Police will launch a three-week city-wide campaign from June 11 to remind public service vehicle and goods vehicle drivers of the importance of safe driving.
During the first week, Police officers will distribute publicity leaflets to drivers as well as the public. The public will also be encouraged to report undesirable driving behaviour to the Police or the Transport Advisory Committee's Transport Complaints Unit.
Police will take stringent enforcement action in the following two weeks against offences including speeding, failing to comply with traffic signals, using a handheld mobile phone while driving and seatbelt-related offences.
In the first four months of this year, there were 4,622 traffic accidents involving casualties, a 4% dip on same period last year. The accidents were mainly the results of following the vehicle in front too closely, vehicles losing control, driving too fast, changing lane carelessly, negligence and failing to comply with traffic signals.
