Barrister Larry Yeung has been jailed 18 months by the District Court for obtaining his professional training fraudulently.

Yeung, 41, was found guilty of obtaining services by deception and of fraud.

Between May 1, 2000 and September 4, 2002, Yeung dishonestly obtained from the University of Hong Kong by deception an education, including lectures and tutorials provided for the part-time Postgraduate Certificate in Laws course.

He falsely represented that he was then employed by a hotel as legal manager, and that his employer had agreed to release him to attend the course. He dishonestly failed to disclose to the university that his genuine employment at the time was a full-time teacher.

The court also heard that between February 25, 2001 and July 11, 2002, Yeung induced Education Department to grant him no-pay study leave. He falsely represented that he intended to apply for and use the no-pay study leave to attend a course related to education or relevant to his duties as a teacher, and dishonestly omitted to disclose to the department that he had already been admitted to the law course.
