10 minibus drivers awarded for safe driving

*

Ten minibus drivers have been awarded in a road-safety competition for their safe behaviour, driving skills and service quality.

The competition was an event under the Road Safety Council's Public Light Bus Safety Campaign.

Running from January 15 to March 31, the contest was open to all full-time minibus drivers with nominations from Public Light Bus associations, trade associations and service providers. Participants had to take part in a quiz and write a short essay on minibus safety.

Among the 627 entries, a panel selected 30 semi-finalists who had to pass spot checks to assess their safe behaviour, driving skills and service quality. Ten finalists were chosen and interviewed on safe driving experiences.

One gold, two silver and two bronze prizes were awarded to winning drivers who received cash prizes of $5,000, $2,000 and $1,000. The remaining five finalists were presented with certificates.

The 30 semi-finalists will be entitled to a free four-day study tour to Singapore on safe driving in early June.

Measures to enhance safety

Speaking at the campaign's priz- presentation ceremony today, the council's chairman Tang King-shing said he was pleased by the low road fatality toll last year. The council will continue to widely promote road safety in Hong Kong.

Deputy Commissioner for Transport Carolina Yip said measures have been in place to step up driver training, enhance drivers' professional conduct and foster a culture of quality service in the minibus sector.
