Judgment on covert surveillance welcomed
*

The Security Bureau welcomes the Court of Appeal's judgment in respect of the temporary validity of the present regime on communications interception and covert surveillance.

The Court of Appeal today handed down its judgment on appeals against the Court of First Instance's decision in a judicial review case concerning the current regime of communications interception and covert surveillance.

It has dismissed the applicants' appeals and the Government's cross-appeal against the earlier Court of First Instance decisions.

The Security Bureau said the Government is studying the court's judgment on its appeal regarding the Law Enforcement (Covert Surveillance Procedures) Order in detail in consultation with the Department of Justice.

It is also working closely with the Legislative Council to scrutinise the Interception of Communications & Surveillance Bill. The judgment would in no way affect the aim to have the bill enacted by the end of this legislative session.
