No smoking: Customs have seized 1.13 million illicit cigarettes with a value of about $1.77 million from a lorry at Kwai Chung.
*

Customs officers have seized 1.13 million illicit cigarettes valued at about $1.77 million with a potential duty of $900,000 from a lorry at Kwai Chung, and arrested the 24-year-old driver.

The Anti-Illicit-Cigarette Division officers of the Customs' Revenue & General Investigation Bureau stopped the lorry inside an outdoor carpark near the Kwai Chung Container Terminals.

Customs believes an illicit cigarette syndicate employed the lorry as a mobile distribution centre to different retail black spots.

Investigations are ongoing. The driver will be charged under the Dutiable Commodities Ordinance.

Anyone found dealing with, selling, or buying dutiable cigarettes is liable to a fine of $1 million and two years' jail.
