Smart ID cards ready for those born 1978-79
*
Immigration Department

Identity-card holders born in 1978-79 are required to apply for new smart ID cards between February 13 and March 25.

Eligible applicants can book an appointment by calling 1838 333, via the ESDlife website, or at any ESD kiosk.

If their ID card bears the "A" or "***" residential symbol, or is issued on or after January 1, 1999, and bears the "R" residential symbol, they need only bring their existing ID card. Other applicants should bring their travel documents showing their current residential status in Hong Kong, in addition to their ID cards.

Those born in 1976 or 1977 are required to apply on or before February 11. Failure to apply within the specified period without reasonable excuse is an offence liable to a $5,000 fine. Those away from Hong Kong within the period can apply within 30 days of their return.

For more information on the ID card replacement exercise, contact the Immigration Department on 2824 6111, or www.smartid.gov.hk.
