Over 90% of 3,345 prisoners have completed their post-release supervision period without re-conviction.

Releasing its sixth report today, the Post-Release Supervision Board said from July 1, 2003 to June 30 this year, 3,904 prisoners were discharged under the Post-Release Supervision Scheme. The board convened eight quarterly meetings and 35 ad hoc meetings, and considered 893 cases of eligible prisoners for post-release supervision.

Under the scheme, a supervising team of officers from the Correctional Services and Social Welfare Departments regularly visit the supervisees and offer them assistance with accommodation, employment referral, application for social security and arrangement of psychiatric or psychological services.

The board said the scheme has contributed to the reduction of recidivism and is beneficial to both the supervisees as well as the community as a whole.
