Court order sought for death inquest

Department of Justice

Secretary for Justice Wong Yan-lung will apply to the Court of First Instance for an inquest be held over Pang Chor-ying, whose skeleton was discovered in a Yau Ma Tei flat in 1999.

The decision was made under section 20 of the Coroners Ordinance. In coming to the decision, Mr Wong has considered all police reports, witness statements, relevant legislation and the reasons of the Coroner.

He said it will be in the public interest for Ms Pang's death to be investigated by the Coroner. As a Coroner has decided not to hold an inquest, the most appropriate course of action is to invite the Court of First Instance to direct that an inquest be held.
