Businessman jailed for Customs bribes
*
ICAC

Businessman Tang Kwok-wai has been jailed 14 months for offering $70,000 in bribes to a Customs officer.

Tang, 41, admitted to one count of conspiracy for a public servant to accept advantages. Another similar charge was left on court file.

The District Court heard that in 1999 Tang became acquainted with a Customs officer. In January last year the officer was transferred to the Textiles Tactical Strike Unit which conducts blitz checks on lorries conveying textiles through boundary control points.

Tang offered to pay him $2,000 a week for providing the team's duty roster, to facilitate his delivery of textile products between Hong Kong and the Mainland. The agreed bribe was later changed to $8,000.

Last September Tang and the officer were arrested by the Independent Commission Against Corruption. The officer was earlier jailed 16 months.
