Insurance fraudster jailed

*

An insurance fraudster has been jailed two years for obtaining a pecuniary advantage by deception and conspiracy to defraud.

The District Court heard that from June to October 1995, the 54-year-old took out five bogus life insurance policies from various companies in favour of his fiancee by inflating his annual salary. Total coverage amounted to US$1.96 million.

In January 1996, the fiancee produced a death certificate purportedly issued by a Mainland hospital and made a claim. The certificate was found to be false and the companies made no compensation.

In June 1997 he surrendered to Police and was brought to court, but jumped bail two months later, before surrendering to Police again last February.
