Fresh provision shops and market meat stall operators should not sell chilled meat as fresh meat, the Food & Environmental Hygiene Department warns, as it cancels the licence of a shop in Tuen Mun for doing just that.
Based on information collected, the department's officers yesterday followed a vehicle which was found to have delivered imported chilled pork in foam boxes to the fresh provision shop at Ching Ho Square in Tuen Mun before midnight.
About 7am, they found a female shopkeeper removing pork chunks from the foam boxes, cutting them into smaller pieces and selling them as fresh pork. A total of 540 kgs of imported chilled pork was later found in 20 foam boxes.
The department it will cancel the meat shop's licence as its operator has breached the licensing condition which prohibits the sale of chilled meat as fresh meat.
The department will continue to closely monitor the supply of meat at the retail level and step up enforcement action to safeguard food safety and public health. Anyone who has doubts about meat sold at retail outlets should call the hotline, 2868 0000.
