Thief extradited from Singapore

*
Hong Kong Police

A 55-year-old man wanted in a nine-year-old theft case worth US$852,000 has been extradited from Singapore. He will face three counts of theft at Eastern Magistracy tomorrow.

The suspect, who had been travelling in and out of Singapore using different passports, was arrested at Changi Airport on January 27 and handed back to Hong Kong Police today.

He was an agent of the victim in the purchase of sewing machines since 1992 in which he was authorized to withdraw and transfer funds from the victim's account. In 1996 the victim found US$852,000 had been transferred from his account to the suspect's accounts without his knowledge. The suspect fled to Singapore.

In 1999 a request was made to Singapore for the arrest and extradition of the suspect. After clarification on his identity, Police made a formal extradition request in January.
