Grand opening: Secretary for Security Ambrose Lee, Acting Chief Executive Donald Tsang and Commissioner of Police Dick Lee unveil the Commemorative Stone at the new Police Headquarters building. |
The new Police Headquarters building will save up to $34 million in rent a year by pooling the force's resources under one roof.
This was the message from Commissioner of Police Dick Lee who formally opened the $2.08 billion building today, which cost a third less than its original budget of $3.23 billion.
At the ceremony officiated by Acting Chief Executive Donald Tsang and Secretary for Security Ambrose Lee, the commissioner said the move into the building will also improve Police efficiency.
"More than 3,800 officers and civilians from formations previously accommodated in leased commercial premises and headquarter units scattered in various other police premises are now accommodated here," he said.
"Our operational efficiency and service to the public is enhanced by the extensive use of new technology within the complex."
The building features modern combined fibre-optic cables and computer flooring. The auditorium, multi-purpose hall and conference rooms are all fitted with advanced audio-visual equipment and video-conference functions.
Next week, the Police and Interpol will co-host the 15th Interpol Symposium for Heads of Police Training in the new complex. This is the first time the conference has been held outside of France.
